Whether you love cats or hate them, we all believe that once you have a pet cat, you should leave no stone unturned in taking the best care of it. Providing them with the best living facilities and keeping track of their health and hygiene are one of the primary responsibilities of a pet owner. In light of that, this piece would be discussing some of the precautions you can take to prevent your cat(s) from contracting any feline diseases.
Feline Dental Disease
As human beings, any kind of dental and gum disease is a terrible phenomenon is terrible for us and we should take all measures to stop it from happening. Cats are no different, they can suffer from early to late stage dental problems just as easily. In fact, it is one of the most common feline diseases recorded.
If the cat’s oral hygiene is ignored, you can expect to have this problem with your cat. Cut loose on carbohydrate-rich foods and don’t let your cat eat expired food or trashy stuff from here and there. Plaque can accumulate more quickly and cause tooth decay and gum infection.
The best way to prevent this from happening is to know what your cat is eating, and by giving it healthy meals.
Feline Rabies
Feline rabies is incurable and it can be contracted when cats are bitten by rabid animals. You may not need a reminder, but rabid animals, cats included, are extremely dangerous.
Keep your cats safe and away from dangerous rabid animals and give them vaccinations. If you see weight loss, yowling, fever and weird behaviour, take your pet to the vet immediately.
Feline Leukemia
Prevent any kind of bites and fight between your pets, whether cats or dogs. Don’t let them go out and for some time with stray and loose cats. Since feline Leukemia virus is usually contracted from bites, shared food/water and body fluids, and that there is no cure for this disease, the best way to avoid it is the means that may play a role in disease contraction.
When you are taking your cats outside for daily walks, stay aware of stray animals.
Feline Respiratory Infections
Infections in the sinuses, nose and throat come under this category. Usually known as upper respiratory infections (URI), these are very contagious. Shared water, food and air are prime means of this infection spreading so avoid that if you see another pet or cat with the symptoms.
You can avoid this disease by giving your cat antibiotics for recovery or as a preventative measure. Keep them indoors and properly vaccinated and when the infection is viral.
Feline Abscess
These abscesses happen when cats fight each other. Though since their skin is very strong, there are rarely any wounds. However, small punctures can happen which is the real problem.
Once the tiny wound is closed, which happens because cats heal quickly, the bacteria that penetrated inside with the wound, remains there. In the hot and humid environment under the skin and within the tissue, the bacteria grows and causes swelling and abscess which become very painful for the cat.
You can avoid this type of feline diseases by just not letting your cat fight with any other animal. The abscess eventually ruptures with draining puss, but if it persists, you should take your cat to the vet.
