The animals nobody wants to cover

Dog and cat owners have options. If you keep house rabbits, a bearded dragon or a pair of ferrets, you will have discovered that most of the pet care in Liverpool is not aimed at you.

I take all of them. I have been doing this for over sixteen years and there is very little I have not been asked to look after.

What I cover

  • Rabbits and guinea pigs — hay, fresh greens, water, run and hutch cleaned out, and time spent with them. Rabbits especially need checking properly in warm weather.
  • Hamsters, gerbils, rats and mice — feeding, water, spot cleaning, and a look at how they are moving and eating.
  • Ferrets — feeding, water, litter, and out-of-cage time if that is your routine.
  • Birds — seed and fresh food, water, cage cleaning, cover on and off, and company where the bird is used to it.
  • Fish — feeding to your measurements, not to my eye. Equipment checked, temperature checked, water level checked.
  • Reptiles — feeding to your schedule, water and misting, and temperatures and humidity checked against what you tell me they should be.
  • Chickens and quail — feeding, water, and eggs collected. Not something most pet sitters will touch.
  • Tortoises and other reptiles — feeding to your schedule, water and misting, temperature and humidity checked against your figures.

If your animal is not on that list, ask. The answer is usually yes.

What I need to know

Small animals go downhill faster than dogs and cats, and the signs are quieter. So the consultation matters more here, not less.

I want to know what normal looks like for your animal. What it eats and how much. What temperature the vivarium should sit at. Whether the rabbit always hides when someone comes in or whether that would be new. What you want me to do if something is off, and which vet you use — a lot of practices will not see exotics, so I need the right one, not the nearest one.

What people say

Sunnydays are not just for dogs and cats, they can do reptiles too! They came to our house each day to take care of our fussy and personality loaded tortoise. Caity was extremely conscientious and took great care of our girl. She was understanding of the unique nuances of looking after a tortoise. We were worried about being away for three weeks but we need not have worried. She was well taken care of. Highly recommended.

I can't recommend Catie enough. She's looked after our guinea pigs twice now, let's herself in the side gate to feed, water and clean and I've been more than happy both times. The most recent visit was during the heatwave and Catie went above and beyond to keep them safe and comfortable. I'm so happy we found Catie.

We use her pet sitting service for our cat and 2 ferrets every time we go travel for the past few years and she always been great! I recommend to everyone, very professional and reliable service!

Catie looks after our three chickens and four quail when we are on holiday. It's good to know someone reliable will be there to feed and water the crazy birds. We've used Catie's services for a couple of years, and will continue to do so. Definitely recommended. A++++

Questions about small animal visits

Do you look after exotics?

Yes. Reptiles, ferrets, birds and fish are all regular for me. Tell me the species and the routine and I will be honest if it is outside what I can do.

Can you clean out while I am away?

Yes. Spot cleaning every visit, and a full clean out on a longer stay if you want one. Tell me where everything lives.

How often should visits be?

Once a day covers most small animals. Twice a day for anything on medication, anything very young, and reptiles with a feeding or misting schedule that needs it.

Do you board small animals?

No. I used to and I no longer do. Everything happens in your own home.

What about heat in summer?

I check it. Rabbits and guinea pigs suffer badly in warm weather and it is one of the first things I look at between June and September.

Which areas do you cover?

Liverpool, Knowsley, Sefton and St Helens. Full list of postcodes.
